What is Young Authors’ Virtual Camp?

Since 2005 Investing in Children has partnered with the London Public Library to offer an in-person Book Camp at the Central Branch. During the pandemic, we created a Young Authors’ Virtual Camp.

Young Authors’ Virtual Camp is a FREE half-day, week-long camp that runs over Zoom for 10 to 15-year-olds who love to read and write!

Campers are able to connect with like-minded peers who share a passion for writing and reading. Engaging writing activities, visits from published authors and fun discussions are all part of a great week of camp. Campers also submit writing and drawing pieces to be published in our Young Authors’ Camp Magazine! The 2021, 2022 and 2023 YAVC Magazines can be found below.

What a great week!

We had a lot of fun at the first ever Young Authors’ Virtual Camp! This is what people had to say:

“The first Young Authors’ Virtual Camp just wrapped up and my daughter Aidah was a participant. I was able to listen in on most of the camp when I was not dropping off or picking up Aidah’s sisters and I just wanted to say WOW! I had no idea what to expect and really had no expectations for what this would be and how Aidah would or would not enjoy it. It was fabulous! Everyday she was so full of ideas and talking about what she learned and immediately after camp she was writing more and so excited about the guest speakers and telling her father and I all about them. And let's talk about the guest speakers quickly…they were so engaging and so interactive with the kids and their excitement helped get and keep the kids excited. It was truly a pleasure listening to Linda and all the authors share their passion about books and their work and while I can not speak for all the kids, I do know as a fact this camp has further sparked Aidah’s interest and love of writing and gave her very tangible skills. Thank you for offering this camp!” - Brandi, Aidah’s mom.

“Councillors/mentors really made this for me. I have always been very shy and introverted and even little things like sharing my thoughts or what I did on the activities were things I never would have done at school in the past! I think doing these kinds of activities online better prepare kids for interacting in real life, as we can still see and hear each other in real time, but it takes off a bit of the pressure for people who might be more nervous! I felt like I could count on mentors to encourage me and I trusted that they would like what I presented to my group (I've been kind of scared of being judged for a while, so that was really nice!!) I was also inspired by the opportunity to see, meet with, and talk with other kids like me who are dedicated to writing and creating imaginative worlds - I haven't met many people like that before, so meeting up is a great way to get to know people and maybe make friends! I also liked meeting authors and becoming a bit more familiar with their personal experiences! Camp was great and helped to push me out of my comfort zone in a positive way! Thank you so much!!! (P.S. I think I'll remember Sarah's comment about bringing the YA Camp magazines to her cottage as reading material and thinking about our skill as writers! :) Thanks again!” Camper at YAVC 2021

“What I liked best about Young Authors’ Virtual Camp is how I could write and people liked it. It made me feel good!” Camper at YAVC 2021
